Tourist guide to spend a weekend in Rome

This we propose aims to be a little guide to spend a weekend in Rome. Sure, it's impossible to imagine visiting the city of Rome on a weekend, as would be impossible to list all the sights and museums of the eternal city. We’ve chosen a few sites we think are the most characteristic, that everyone who spend a weekend in Rome should visit.

What you can do on a weekend in Rome can be considered as a trip due to the greatness of the city. The first route we propose is the one from Piazza Venezia to San Giovanni. Piazza Venezia is a Renaissance jewel, in which stands the Palazzo Venezia with its museum containing paintings ranging from '200 to '500.

Always in Piazza Venezia is located the Vittoriano or Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland), monument built to honour Victor Emmanuel II . Going on we find the Flavian Amphitheatre, or Colosseum, eternal monument of the the Ancient Rome, flanked by the Arch of Constantine and the Domus Area (built by Nero). Further ahead we reach Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano.

Among other characteristic neighborhoods of Rome, we find the district of EUR (built for the World Fair of 1942 by the fascist regime), the one of the Tiber, which runs along the Tiber River, the Renaissance district and the Janiculum. Do not miss the one that runs through Trevi, Via Veneto up to the Quirinal. The magnificent Villa Borghese definitely deserves a visit.

Also to the itineraries ranging from Celio on the Janiculum, or the one along the Appian Way.

A weekend in Rome without visiting the Vatican City doesn’t make sense. For shopping lovers, a weekend in Rome looks like the ideal thing, in fact, you can choose among the exclusive shops of Via del Corso and Piazza di Spagna, and the characteristic second-hand markets, such as Porta Portese.

Undoubtedly, during a wekkend in Rome, you can taste the typical Roman cuisine in which stand out the famous pasta dishes, the well-known s cheese, and second courses of meat including lamb and Coda alla vaccinara.

Rome’s suburbs deserve a weekend visit, too, in wich are worthy of mention the town of Tivoli where there is the wonderful Villa d'Este (XVI century), the Roman Castles area (where there's good wine); the city of Ostia is perfect for sea-lovers and nature enthusiasts are going to love parks and wildlife reserves of Rome.

Finally, we suggest you some hotels and accomodations if you wish to stay in the city of Rome.

Within a range of ten kilometers from the Coliseum, the landscape is marked by an extremely-tightly built tissue, as in a non-uniform way. Over the last three decades Rome has inflated inside the ring road of the Grande Raccordo Anulare, beyond which got out in an eastward direction, while in south-east a rural continuum towards Tiber’s mouth has almost made concrete, even beyond Ostia’s beach and Fiumicino, at the moment avoiding the hunting lodge of Cartel Porziano and the pinewood of Cartel Fusano.

Under the new millennium, Rome shows herself as a great European capital, which has been able to preserve its cultural and monumental heritage, but pointing a modernization effort to deal with the challenges of the future.
